FILMLOOK® is a real time, digital
process that simulates the look
of a telecine transfer through
replicating the motion
characteristics, gamma curve,
color and texture of film.
The process is patented and has been
in use by broadcasters, major
studios and independents since 1989.

FILMLOOK® Brings Movie Magic to Video

Hollywood's all about image and fooling the eye. It's about illusion--or sometimes delusion. Hollywood is about presenting a polished product for viewing, but often at extraordinarily high costs. Video producers are constantly searching for ways to present high quality images that are competitive with film. Fortunately, there's FILMLOOK®.

Only FILMLOOK® can give video-shot productions the "essence" of a film-originated work. Founder and inventor Robert Faber studied the intricacies of film's appearance and designed FILMLOOK®, a real-time process that eliminates the hassles of film and saves producers thousands and thousands of dollars.

For example, if a film company is going to broadcast their final product on television or release it on home video, then there is no point on spending the extra expense shooting on film since they must provide a tape as an end product anyway. FILMLOOK® is a real-time post-production process that requires no lab processing, no dailies and no telecine transfers, and this ultimately saves time and money.

PROCESS

The FILMLOOK® process affects three main features to achieve the appearance of film: motion characteristics, gray scale/contrast and grain pattern. By altering the gray scale, color and contrast, the video mimics the typical film characteristics and is given the vibrant feel of film.

MOTION CHARACTERISTICS - With a video camera, you see 60 pictures per second (for each video field) versus 24 in film. The FILMLOOK® process gives the image the dynamic feel of film.

GRAY SCALE/CONTRAST - FILMLOOK® alters the gray scale, color and contrast to mimic the typical film characteristic - the "film density curve."

SIMULATION OF GRAIN PATTERN - A generated grain pattern that can be varied in intensity and imitates film by remaining static for the duration of each (imaginary) film frame (two or three fields).

REQUIREMENTS

FILMLOOK® for standard definition realizes its greatest potential when the video produced is of optimum broadcast quality. This requires the use of a 3 CCD broadcast camera such as the Sony BVP/BVW/DVW series, Phillips/Thomson LDK series or equivalent and a broadcast tape format such as Beta SP, DVCPro 50 or Digital Beta. In standard definition the camera's high speed electronic shutter must not be used and detail enhancement should be minimal. If any D.V.E. type moves, flips, spins, manipulations, computer animation, moving C.G.'s, fast or slow motions are planned, please consult with us. Use of 8mm/Hi-8, VHS/SVHS formats are not recommended. Standard definition formats submitted must be Beta SP or Digital Beta. For DV or PAL origination issues, please consult with us.

For 24P Hi-Def as well as standard definition, "film style" lighting with normal video levels and good exposure control should be used. The use of optical filters such as diffusion, polarizers and ND filtration is encouraged and recommended. Modifications in gamma, unintentional over-exposures/white clipping should be avoided. On 24P cameras, ensure that the electronic shutter is set to 1/48th of a second or faster. We can accept Sony HDCAM at all hi-def rates (including 24 PsF and interlace). For all other HD tape formats please consult with us.
